KOREAN PARLIAMENTARY LEAGUE ON CHILDREN,
POPULATION AND ENVIRONMENT (CPE)

Background
The Korean Parliamentary League on Children, Population and Environment (CPE) was established in November, 1989 on the recommendation of the United Nations that there should be a focal point for the activities of Korean parliamentarians in the field of social development. It is also aimed at joining global efforts at the parliamentary level to resolve social development issues. Only members of the Parliament are qualified for regular membership and others interested are allowed to join the league as associate members.
Main Activities
CPE sends its members to foreign countries to conduct a survey of their current population and development status. It also attends a great number of international conferences in regards to social development, representing Korea's interests on the international setting. In particular, Korea's success stories in population control have been echoed by CPE members on numerous occasions including the Asian Parliamentarians' Meeting on Population and Development and the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development, providing many countries a possible solution to their population problems.
CPE also took initiative in creating the Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED), aware that regional cooperation - especially among policy makers - holds a key to resolving environmental issues that know no borders now. In an effort to raise the public awareness of social development issues, CPE has been holding numerous workshops touching upon almost every area of such issues. It also invites a number of experts to assist parliamentarians with their legislative activities. Most significantly, CPE has been making efforts to reflect the outcomes of the seminars or workshops in legislation.
